Many parents with school-age children ask us every year to keep the lights on even during the autumn holidays, in mid-October. We do not do this for three reasons:

  • When the lights are on, many volunteers are on duty during those hours to fix any malfunctions. We cannot ask them to be permanently present for an extra three weeks.
  • Power costs are sponsored by the municipality and the power company, so extending the burning hours costs them twice as much.
  • City residents living along De Lichtjesroute are particularly inconvenienced by the heavy traffic on busy days; we do not want to disturb them for longer than a maximum of four weeks.
