ANBI status

As an incentive to increase public support, from 1 January 2012 the tax authorities have relaxed the rules when donating and investing in ANBI foundations. All foundations have been assessed by the tax authorities and a limited number have been granted the new ANBI Culture status. De Lichtjesroute Foundation obtained this ANBI Cultuur status from 1 January 2012.

Donations to a cultural ANBI

A donation to an ANBI classified as a cultural institution is going to temporarily give an extra tax advantage in income tax. This is because an income taxpayer may take into account 1.25 times the amount of the donation made for the gift deduction.

Periodic donations are fully deductible, with no threshold and ceiling. However, these donations must be recorded in a deed drawn up with a notary for a period of at least five years. As a result, anyone who gives €100 to a cultural institution can deduct €125. Tax laws are subject to change. Before making a donation, always consult the tax authorities' website for the current conditions for deduction. Stichting Lichtjesroute is not liable for any failure or incorrect application of tax legislation.

Objectives

The original Lichtjesroute came into being immediately after the liberation on 18 September 1944: the liberators were welcomed by Eindhoven residents with a candle or grease pot in their garden or window. From 1947, these were replaced by festive lights, and by 1969 this route of lights was about 40 kilometres long. After 1969 it fell silent, until in 1984 some passionate enthusiasts revived the route. De Lichtjesroute and Eindhoven: it is an unbreakable tradition that belongs to the minds of the people of Eindhoven.

De Lichtjesroute foundation was established in 1984 and has its registered office in Eindhoven. The foundation has the following objectives: commemorating the liberation of the city of Eindhoven and its residents plus keeping alive the memory of welcoming the liberators on 18 September 1944.It also cooperates with other institutions that pursue a similar (historical and social) goal.

These objectives are achieved by organising an annual Lichtjesroute in Eindhoven. Some ornaments even carry the story going back to its origins: the Second World War. From the route map of the liberators to the bee hive in which a Jewish sister managed to escape a fateful death.

In cooperation with government and industry in the Eindhoven Region, De Lichtjesroute also aims to ensure its survival through innovative lighting techniques.

De Lichtjesroute thanks to enthusiastic volunteers

Every year - from 18 September to the third weekend of October - a permanent group of volunteers, steered by a board, provides a 22-kilometre route of light ornaments and special lighting projects in public spaces. The effect of this route is twofold. Firstly, residents and visitors of Eindhoven experience a memorable evening; secondly, the annual theme of the route keeps the idea of freedom alive.

An essential fact is that De Lichtjesroute is carried entirely by a large number of unpaid volunteers. None of the foundation's members, including board members, receive salary or any other form of remuneration for their efforts and commitment. The foundation's income consists of subsidies, donations and other proceeds.

Their enthusiasm and commitment together form the basis for the organisation. The fun in conceiving, crafting, placing the ornaments and objects is at the forefront of De Lichtjesroute organisation. The role of the board is mainly to facilitate the volunteers: think permit applications, insurance, HSE, housing and more. They also take care of networking, building and maintaining contacts and cooperating with the government and business community.

With help from the Eindhoven Region, De Lichtjesroute also aims to ensure its survival through innovative lighting techniques. It is also trying to recruit volunteers through targeted communication and appealing social media expressions to ensure this continuity as well.
